Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Disclaimer: I am not normally not this bitter when it comes to book reviews, I’m just genuinely disappointed after this book didn’t live up to all the hype it was getting.
Let me just start by saying that the hype for this book was INSANE. Normally I am super appreciative of hype because it generally means the book is absolutely amazing.. but after reading Red Queen I sat afterwards thinking that I must have read a different book all together.
“Anyone can betray anyone.” – Yeah, the hype of the book community betrayed me!
I’ll give credit where credit is due: Aveyard built a fantastic world, and she packed a lot of detail into it – but that’s as far as the detail went. I feel like she spent so much time painting the world that she didn’t think to develop her characters. They lacked depth, and I found myself without emotional connection to any of them (and I am such an emotional person).
The characters were cookie cutter cliches, and thAT TERRIBLE LOVE TRIANGLE OH MY GOD. BETWEEN TWO BROTHERS!? That part of the plot just made me angry, and I resented both of the brothers even before the ‘plot twist’ at the end of the book.
Oh, and let’s not forget that this is a blatant copycat of Red Rising.
Even though I finished this book feeling underwhelmed, I am curious to see where the next book in the trilogy takes these series, as I feel like the world Aveyard has constructed has a lot of potential. I’ll be picking up Glass Sword when it’s released, however my expectations will certainly be lower this time around.
Have you read this book? Did you like it more than I did?
